Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw has vowed to come back a stronger player after double fracture his right leg in a horrific challenge in tonight's Champions League encounter with PSV.

The first half was held up for around nine minutes as the stricken full back was treated by medical professionals before both sets of supporters at the Philips Stadium applauded the player as he was taken to hospital

Shaw's surging run into the opposition box was brought to a shuddering halt by Hector Moreno and appeared to land awkwardly from the crude challenge

Marcos Rojo was called in to replace the stricken full back and the club confirmed post-match that Shaw had suffered a double fracture to his right leg and would be transferred to Manchester to be operated on immediately.

The most expensive English teenager of all-time thanked the public for their messages of support in the aftermath of the incident.

"Thank you everyone for your messages, words cannot describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger."

He also tweeted his former club Southampton for their support.

"@SouthamptonFC thank you, you don't know how much you as a club mean to me, thank you so much I really appreciate it."

Adnan Januzaj, on a season-long loan at Borussia Dortmund, offered his support to his United team-mate.

"Horrible to see what happened. I wish u all the best my brother and stay strong you will comeback even stronger @LukeShaw23"
