The Treble

Celtic, 1967: Scottish Football League, Scottish Cup, European Cup

Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup after they beat Inter Milan in the final. As well as the two most prestigious domestic trophies, they also picked up the League Cup and Glasgow Cup as they swept aside all before them.

The Treble

PSV Eindhoven, 1988: Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, European Cup

The next side to complete the 'perfect' treble also came from Holland. The Boeren of Eindhoven beat Benfica in the final to etch their name into history. Guus Hiddink's side needed penalties to complete the feat.

The Treble

Manchester United, 1999: Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League

Alex Ferguson's team had a rollercoaster of a ride to the treble. A memorable FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal saw the dream nearly ended, while it needed two very late goals against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final to complete the final piece of the jigsaw.

The Treble

Barcelona, 2009: La Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions League

Barcelona looked unstoppable last season, and they proved it by winning everything in sight. Pep Guardiola's side outclassed Manchester United in the Champions League final.

The Alternative Treble

Galatasaray, 2000: Turkish Premier Super League, Turkish Football Cup, Uefa Cup

The dominant side in Turkey won their only European trophy in 2000 when they beat Arsenal on penalties in the final. They also won their two most prestigious domestic tournaments.

The Alternative Treble

Liverpool, 2001: FA Cup, League Cup, Uefa Cup

Gerard Houllier's side completed a clean sweep of the cups in 2001. Two late goals from Michael Owen against Arsenal clinched the FA Cup, they needed penalties against Birmingham to claim the League Cup, while a 5-4 classic against Deportivo Alaves saw them win on the continent.

The Alternative Treble

Bayern Munich, 2001: Bundesliga, DFB-Ligapokal, Uefa Champions League

Like Liverpool in 1984, if Bayern could have won Germany's most prestigious domestic cup rather than its lesser cousin, they would have found themselves among the 'perfect' treble winners.

The Alternative Treble

FC Porto, 2003: Portuguese SuperLiga, Cup of Portugal, Uefa Cup

Under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, Porto beat Celtic in the Uefa Cup final to complete a memorable season.

When Bayern Munich and Inter Milan battle it out in this weekend's Champions League final, not only will they be fighting for Europe's top prize, but will also be aiming to complete an historic treble. Both Bayern and Inter have won their league and domestic cup, and clinching the Champions League would mean adding their names to an exclusive group of treble winners. Whoever wins, it will be a first for the country they hail from. Five teams have completed the 'perfect' treble - winning the league, main domestic cup and the most prestigious European cup all in one season. We also take a look at the other European sides to lift three trophies (including a European cup) in a season, but made up of a different combination of trophies.
