Schalke go through

Schalke rallied to beat Valencia 3-1 last night to complete a 4-2 aggregate win and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League -- a victory that may not be enough, however, to save coach Felix Magath's job.

Ricardo Costa put Valencia ahead in the 17th minute, but Jefferson Farfan equalised with a free-kick in the 40th and Mario Gavranovic notched the second in the 52nd. Gavranovic hit the Valencia's post twice late on, before Farfan secured the victory deep into stoppage time.

The German media had already reported that Schalke's board had decided to end Magath's contract.
