Ronaldo hits hat-trick to crush Shakhtar
Cristiano Ronaldo hit a second-half hat-trick as Real Madrid opened their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 victory over 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk in Group A at the Bernabeu.
Karim Benzema put the hosts ahead in the 30th minute, while Shakhtar had midfielder Taras Stepanenko sent off for a second yellow card.
Real, helped by a dubious penalty, doubled their lead through Ronaldo and the Portuguese got his second from the spot in the 63rd minute after Marcio Azevedo's handball. Ronaldo capped off the victory when he headed his third of the night 10 minutes from time. The win did come at a cost for Real, however, with Gareth Bale, Raphael Varane and captain Sergio Ramos all sustaining injuries.
In the other game in Group A, Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani gave Paris St-Germain a 2-0 home win over Malmo.
Julian Draxler's first goal for Wolfsburg was enough for the Germans to see off CSKA Moscow, while Sevilla scored two second-half penalties and missed another as they defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0.
