Real were ahead on away goals going into the second leg, having drawn 1-1 in France a fortnight earlier but they were in no mood to play for the scoreless draw that would have taken them through.

They set about the visitors with their customary panache, with Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo particularly lively. Marcelo had a shot saved, but Lyon weathered the storm and then threatened the Madrid goal on a couple of occasions.

However, Real looked the more likely scorers and went ahead on 36 minutes when the irrepressible Marcelo played a brilliant one-two with Ronaldo before powering into the box, side-stepping a challenge and drilling the ball home.

Madrid could have wrapped it up before half-time, but missed a couple of good chances.

On 65 minutes, though, they struck to all but kill off the French side. Marcelo's searching ball was missed by Memut Ozil but fell nicely for Benzema, who shrugged off Cris and tucked it past Hugo Lloris.

Angel di Maria added a third on 75 minutes, clipping Ozil's flick over Lloris.
