LEAGUE OF IRELAND champions St Patrick's Athletic will start the defence of their crown with a tricky trip to take on Cork City on the opening night of the 2014 campaign on March 7.

Liam Buckley's men were hoping to kick off the new season at home, but instead they face the journey to Leeside.

Dundalk, runners-up last season, will be looking for FAI Cup semi-final revenge when they meet Louth rivals Drogheda United at Hunky Dorys Park.

Newly promoted Athlone Town will return to the top flight with an away match against Sligo Rovers, while Roddy Collins will begin his league duties as Derry boss by with a trip to Tallaght to take on Shamrock Rovers.

Elsewhere, Limerick will host Bray, and UCD will welcome fellow Dubliners Bohemians to Belfield.

Buckley's Saints are setting off with the sole mission of retaining their trophy and league chiefs will be hoping that the title race is still alive when they lock horns with Sligo Rovers in the final round of fixtures.
