Cavani puts Uruguay on brink of Brazil

Jordan 0 Uruguay 5

Edinson Cavani's stunning injury-time free-kick put the seal on Uruguay's emphatic victory over Jordan in their intercontinental World Cup play-off first leg in Amman.

The two-time World Cup winners ran riot with a 5-0 demolition of their hapless hosts. Maxi Pereira got the ball rolling with the opener for Oscar Tabarez's men after 22 minutes, and Christian Stuani made it 2-0 shortly before the interval.

Nicolas Lodeiro made it three with 21 minutes to, before Cristian Rodriguez and Cavani wrapped up the win.

The return match will be played in Montevideo next Wednesday.

Mexico, too, are virtually assured of their place after beating New Zealand 5-1.
