Brennan on double
Monaghan United cruised past a disappointing Limerick at Jackman Park, thanks mainly to a man-of-the-match performance by Sean Brennan.
The forward scored twice in the second half to finish off Limerick after Philip Hughes opened the visitors' account with a fine free-kick.
Monaghan enjoyed the best of the opening 15 minutes and it took a brilliant save by Dave Ryan to prevent the opener.
Limerick's Stephen Hickey put the ball in the Monaghan net, but the effort was ruled out for offside after 30 minutes.
But Monaghan finally broke the deadlock after 37 minutes when Hughes' well-struck free from just outside the penalty area went in off an upright.
Monaghan deserved their half-time lead and they doubled their tally 10 minutes into the second half. A cross from the right broke between Brennan and goalkeeper Ryan, with the former getting the vital touch.
Brennan then rounded off the scoring when he raced down the left from near halfway and then cut inside and his strong shot beat the diving Ryan.
