Martin O'Neill has been dealt a big blow as Everton midfielder Darron Gibson look set to miss the rest of the season after he fractured his fifth metatarsal.
The injury-prone midfielder was forced to pull out of Ireland's 1-1 draw with Poland in Dublin last Sunday with a stomach problem and this latest setback will come as a major blow to Ireland who looked devoid of any creativity in the centre of the park against the Poles.
A statement from Everton read: "Darron Gibson has suffered a small fracture to the fifth metatarsal of his foot and will miss today's game against Southampton.
"The midfielder will now be monitored by Everton's medical staff in the coming days and surgery may not be required."
The unlucky former Manchester United man has been dogged by injuries in the past few years and missed most of the 2013-14 season with a knee injury.
