Bit O'Red pass Drogheda test

Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Sligo Rovers showed challengers Drogheda United that they mean business with a comprehensive 4-1 win at The Showgrounds last night.

Rovers were dominant from start to finish, with Mark Quigley, Seamus Conneely, Romuald Boco and Joseph Ndo all on the mark as the Bit O' Red reopened a four-point lead at the top.

Substitute Peter Hynes did manage to pull one back for the visitors, but they were well beaten on a night when they could have taken over at the top of the table.

In the First Division, Waterford Utd returned to winning ways with a goal in each half to overcome Mervue Utd 2-0 and close the gap on second place Longford Town to just one point.

Gunners close in on Cazorla

Santi Cazorla is poised to become an Arsenal player early this week. The Spain midfielder is in London finalising his move and it is understood he will be part of the Gunners squad which travels to Germany for a training camp if, as expected, the deal is completed in time.

Arsenal take on Cologne next Sunday in a friendly. The club have not yet been able to formally announce the signing of Cazorla owing to complications caused by the financial plight of his current club Malaga, but the Spanish side's problems are not expected to jeopardise the completion of the deal.

Damiao keeps Brazil purring

Gold medal favourites Brazil twice came from behind to beat Honduras 3-2 with a penalty from Neymar and two from Leandro Damiao to clinch their place in the semi-finals of the men's Olympic tournament.

Mexico and Japan also booked their spots in the last four. Mexico survived a fightback from Senegal in a thrilling match that delighted a crowd of almost 82,000 at Wembley, that saw Senegal come from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 before two defensive errors allowed Mexico to win 4-2 in extra-time.

Japan cruised to a 3-0 win over Egypt in front of another huge crowd of 70,000 at Old Trafford. The semi-finals will be played on Tuesday, with Mexico facing Japan at Wembley.
