Bird-brain Moreno apologises for 'regrettable' owl kicking
The player who caused outrage in Colombia for kicking an owl has received death threats and been banned for two games and fined.
Pereira defender Luis Moreno ruffled more than a few feathers by kicking the bird as it lay prone on the pitch of Atletico Junior, who had come to regard it as a mascot after it made its home in the stadium. Moreno has become public enemy number one after the owl later died in a veterinary clinic.
"My family is very worried about what happened because an entire country is against me," he said. "I believe what happened is regrettable and I apologised to the entire country," he said.
"The animal was a symbol of the local fans and, considering this aggression took place in their stadium in full view of the spectators, the act can clearly be seen as one of provocation," said the league's disciplinary commission in a statement.
The Panama defender was fined around €400 in addition to his suspension, although on the field he escaped without a caution from the referee -- who clearly didn't give a hoot.
