Alex Ferguson has claimed that Dele Alli is the best young midfielder he has seen since Paul Gascoigne, a view that the teenager’s club coach Mauricio Pochettino endorsed.
England manager Roy Hodgson compared the 19-year-old to Bryan Robson before his superb performance against Germany last weekend and now Ferguson has acclaimed his talents.
“He is probably the best young midfielder I have seen in many years,” the former Manchester United manager said. “Probably going back as far as Gascoigne.” Asked about Ferguson’s compliment, Pochettino said: “It’s very good praise from one of the best managers in history. I can only agree with him.”
Pochettino was not worried by the hype surrounding the teenager. “You can see the whole season how he has managed the pressure,” he said. “He is very calm, very mature. He has managed the pressure and the popularity to be a senior player and play for the national team.”
Pochettino was convinced of Alli’s talent when he joined the Tottenham squad this summer, having being signed in January last year and loaned back to MK Dons.
But the Argentine has been surprised by his attitude and maturity. “There is always a question mark with a young player,” Pochettino said. “You can assess his performance on the pitch and in training. But how a young player can be affected for the big things that happen, being a senior player, being in the national team, this is always a question mark. The potential is massive.” (© Daily Telegraph, London)
