Ajax won their 30th Dutch league title and first since 2004, beating FC Twente 3-1 yesterday to leapfrog their rivals and settle acompelling battle on the final day of the season.
Ajax, a point behind 2010 champions Twente going into the match, sealed victory thanks to two goals from Siem de Jong. Victory made it a first league title for Frank de Boer, who began his coaching career by replacing Martin Jol in December.
Twente qualify for the Champions League, as PSV Eindhoven could only manage a 0-0 draw at FC Groningen. In Italy, after finishing fourth last term Sampdoria suffered a humiliating relegation from Serie A after they lost 2-1 at home to Palermo yesterday.
Rivals Lecce won 2-0 at already-relegated Bari to condemn Sampdoria to the drop with one round of matches left.
The Genoa side, last relegated in 1999, sank like a stone after selling top strikers Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini in January when they were in midtable.
