Westport leading the way for girls' rugby in Connacht
For the girls of Westport, rugby ignited properly in early 2010, driven by a small group of enthusiastic parents and coaches who set up a separate girls' mini and youth section in the club, supported all the way by Wendy Hickey and Lyndon Jones from the Connacht Branch IRFU.
The local girls' Sacred Heart School has a strong sporting tradition which meant that girls were eager to take on the challenge of a tough, physical game, hitherto the domain of their brothers.
At youth level since then, Westport has fielded two teams each year at U-15 and U-18 levels. The U-15s have been runners up in the Connacht Championship for the last three seasons, while the U-18s have been Connacht champions for the last two seasons. They also hold the St Mary's Limerick invitational Biddy Liddy Perpetual Trophy.
Seven of the Westport girls are on the Connacht panel for this season and since the inception of the U-18s inter-provincial competition the Westport girls have always made up the majority of the Connacht team.
Two of our girls, Becky Gavin and Ursula Sammon, are knocking on the door of the U-19 Ireland |squad.
