Video: Conor Murray named Munster’s Player of the Year

Conor Murray was named Munster’s Player of the Year in Cork today, with JJ Hanrahan taking the Young Player of the Year accolade.

The annual gala event took place in the Maryborough Hotel, Cork today with eleven awards presented to worthy recipients involved in domestic and professional rugby in Munster.

The Munster Squad including Captain Peter O'Mahony, and former Player of the Year winners Tommy O'Donnell, James Coughlan and Donnacha Ryan were in attendance today, joining domestic game volunteers in recognising and honouring rugby achievements across the province.

With an audience of 240 guests Conor Murray took the top prize after fighting off stiff competition from fellow nominees James Coughlan and Ian Keatley.

21-year-old out-half JJ Hanrahan took the Young Player of the Year, while wing forward Shane Buckley received the John McCarthy Award for the Greencore Academy Player of the Year.

Women's Player of the Year went to Currow's Siobhan Fleming, picking up the award for a second time the international back row was recently named in Ireland's World Cup extended training squad.

The latest inductee into the Munster Rugby Hall of Fame was Shannon's Brian O'Brien.  While acknowledged for his contribution to rugby in Munster and Ireland, the former centre also introduced Munster Rugby to the anthem "Stand Up and Fight” and led the guests in a rendition of the song.

The club and school awards were distributed around the province with Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary representatives all receiving accolades.  Tipperary clubs Nenagh RFC and Clonmel RFC claimed the senior and junior honours while Bantry and Killorglin were worthy recipients for their respective youths and mini sections.  The school of the year was awarded to Senior Cup winners Crescent College Comprehensive.
