Ulster rugby star Tommy Bowe revealed he was shocked by the excitement his engagement created on the web.

The Monaghan man, who was in high spirits at the annual IRUPA Players Awards last night in Dublin, recently confirmed his engagement to long-term girlfriend former Miss Wales, Lucy Whitehouse.

"It was mad, I wasn't expecting that at all," he told the Irish Independent, referring to the frenzy of online excitement over his engagement.

With work taking up the majority of his year, Tommy said finding a suitable date for the wedding could be problematic.

The annual Irish Rugby Union Players' Association Players Awards are the only national awards where players vote for the members of the squad they think went the extra mile on the pitch.

Devin Toner, Brian O'Driscoll, Jordi Murphy, Rob Kearney, Leo Cullen and Gordon D'Arcy all attended the black-tie event, which was held in the DoubleTree Hilton in Dublin 4.

Ulster player Andrew Trimble was honoured with the Hibernia College IRUPA Players' Player of the Year 2014 prize.
