Ireland overcame Six Nations rivals Scotland by 17-9 to claim seventh position at the World Rugby under-20 Championship in Viadana.

The Scots were the first off the mark with a Blair Kinghorn penalty on six minutes but were soon behind as Stephen Fitzgerald dotted down in the corner and Athy's Joey Carberry adding the extras.

Kinghorn reduced to gap to a solitary point by the break with his second penalty.

Ireland made a whole host of substitutions at the break and Garry Ringrose took over the kicking duties to put Ireland 10-6 ahead.

The Scots forced another mistake and George Horne nailed the kick to pull it back to 10-9.

The game hung in the balance until eight minutes from time when Fitzgerald crossed for his second try and a hard-fought win for Nigel Carolan's men.
