University College Dublin (UCD) was in party mode following Ireland's win over England on Saturday.

University College Dublin (UCD) was in party mode following Ireland's win over England on Saturday.

Many UCD students and recent graduates of the college played a pivotal role in Ireland's victory.

Luke McGrath, a recent commerce graduate, celebrated his first cap, while Dan Leavy, a current law student at the Belfield college, won his second cap.

Garry Ringrose (22), a UCD business and law student, made the outside centre berth his own during the Six Nations tournament.

And flanker Sean O'Brien recently finished his sport and exercise management course at the university.

Bobby Byrne, Director of Rugby at UCD, told the Irish Independent he was delighted to see members of the rugby club do so well.

"It's terrific to see them make progress so quickly and to be involved in such a fantastic occasion," he said.

"Rob Kearney is one of our lads who hasn't played for us for a while, but is still registered as a UCD player.

"Part of our role is to get these guys through college while at the same time helping them pursue a professional rugby career.

"It's a difficult thing to do, but the university provides them with a lot of support.

"I was at the match and it was a great occasion - one of the days you just wouldn't forget."

He commended scrum-half McGrath's performance on the pitch.
