Rules inconsistency bound to antagonise players and coaches

PAUL O'CONNELL attended a meeting with referees' chief Paddy O'Brien alongside other Six Nations coaches and players last week where the message -- for good or bad -- was that there would be no change in refereeing interpretations.
Interestingly, ahead of the new Super 15 season, refs' chief Andre Watson has declared that he will encourage referees not to punish players who go off their feet at rucks, providing they have demonstrated positive intent.
Given the inconsistencies in interpretation in this part of the world when players who are attempting to poach or clear out lose their footing, this contradictory approach seems certain to antagonise players and coaches alike during the forthcoming Six Nations. DK
