Anthem blunder latest bum note

THERE were red faces all around at Lansdowne Road last Saturday as, with the crowd eagerly awaiting the really jaunty bit after the middle eight of the Italian national anthem, the Army and Garda bands suddenly stopped playing.
Was this a Murrayfield-type experiment, with the 5,000 or so Italians expected to finish their ditty a cappella?
Not so. "The Italian anthem was mistakenly shortened by the Army and Garda bands and IRFU apologised to @Federugby at the team dinner," stated the IRFU's official Twitter page.
It was another diplomatic gaffe to add to the failure to acknowledge Ronan O'Gara's achievement in becoming Ireland's record caps holder.
It once more prompts a vain hope that event organisers should concentrate on getting the basics right, rather than indulge in childish, over-enthusiastic cheerleading.
