Leinster Schools Jnr League final

A sparkling display from Newbridge College proved just enough to account for CBC Monkstown in a well-above average Leinster Schools Junior League final at Donnybrook last night.
CBC out-half Sean Kearns always looked to bring his outside backs into the game with sharp passing, while Newbridge seemed more capable of springing forward through their players' individual brilliance.
The Kildare school went ahead when second-row Tom Treacy strode majestically out of defence to stretch the CBC cover. No 8 Tom Brady was in the right place at the right time to take the ball the rest of the way home for a 5-0 lead in the 12th minute.
It was double trouble for CBC 10 minutes later when Newbridge surged from the halfway line, their out-half Mark Sutton speeding past tacklers and getting around in support to receive the ball again and race into the left corner to put his side 10 points to the good.
To restore confidence, Monkstown needed some measure of reward for their positive approach.
They had no problem winning the ball, using it properly was a different matter against a solid defensive line.
The tempo was relentless. Monkstown did all they could to reel in the leaders, having the better of it at the breakdown, where loose forwards Dylan Haney and Brett Keaveney were a nuisance.
A succession of penalties conceded by Newbridge gave CBC the territory they were looking for and full-back Cormac Cullinane ducked inside a tackler for an injury-time try, converted by fly-half Kearns, but it came just to late.
