O'Neill leads Marist stroll
Marist College 40 Roscommon CBS 3
Marist College of Athlone advanced to the final of the Connacht Junior Cup with a six-try demolition of Roscommon CBS in Athlone yesterday.
The home team led by 19 points to nil at half-time and although Roscommon grabbed the first score on the resumption of play, it was mere consolation as Marist ran in three further tries during the second half to record a comprehensive victory.
Three tries in the first half from captain Mathias O'Neill, Liam Winnett and Ciaran Sugrue, and two conversions from Rory Dempsey, had Marist ahead by 19 points at the break.
Mark Purcell got CBS off the mark with a penalty kick for the first score of the second spell but they were the visitors' only points of the afternoon.
Marist powered further ahead with two tries from Mattie Nally which were converted by Adam Murtagh. Conor Larkin rounded off the scoring late on with a sixth try as Marist eased into next week's decider in Galway.
