Maloney proves hero as Roscrea shock 'Nure

Leinster Schools Senior Cup
The pre-cup script said the upper half of the draw was Terenure's to lose. Well, somebody forgot to tell Roscrea and yesterday at Donnybrook the underdogs deservedly booked a spot in the semi-final.
Roscrea were led from the front with workaholic No 8 Colin Maloney -- who tackled himself to a standstill -- and fellow back-rower Eamon Quirke both impressing. It made for the consummate team performance.
They laid down an early marker, with the opening 10 minutes spent entirely in Terenure territory and got their reward courtesy of a well-struck Bill Duggan penalty.
However, the 'Nure were back level within seven minutes when Ryan Roopnarinsingh slotted over penalty which he had created.
After a period of attrition, the key moment arrived just before half- time. Terenure's most impressive player Seanie O'Loughlin was tackled and, with the ball bouncing free, referee John Montayne played a fine advantage which was seized upon by Philip O'Dwyer.
He fed the supporting Shane Layden, who kicked through along the deck for super sub Maurice Fitzgerald to gather and cross for the game's opening try.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Roscrea went further ahead with another counter-attacking try. A cross-field kick from 'Nure skipper Danny McCormack to O'Loughlin ended up in the hands Matthew Mellotte.
He immediately transferred to O'Dwyer and, in an instant, the full- back was on his way. The outstanding Maloney tracked him before passing for hooker Denis O'Dwyer to race clear and in under the Terenure posts. Duggan converted and at 15-3 Roscrea were looking good.
Terenure gave themselves hope when a slick pass from Colin Jones put speedy wing Philip Smith in at the corner to set up a grand finale.
However, a lone McCormack penalty in the 65th minute was as close as it got, with the gallant Roscrea defence holding firm.
