Madigan runs riot to stun Monkstown

Leinster Schools Junior Cup

Newbridge College gave an impressive statement of intent as they steamrolled CBC Monkstown 22-0 at Anglesea Road to book their place in the quarter-finals.

This win sets up an intriguing battle with holders Terenure, who will have to be wary of the Kildare school's pacey backline, from where all four tries came.

Particularly impressive was free-running full-back Matthew Madigan, who caused untold damage to the south Dublin boys' defence.

He set up the opening try for winger Ivan Briody with a quick tap-penalty after just six minutes.

From a scrum, No 8 Ritchie Dalton fed scrum-half Mark Sutton, who dived over for the second try.

The visitors continued to dominate after the break and Madigan crossed for a deserved score, adding the extras himself. Paddy Kyne's try completed the rout.

Meanwhile, Castleknock's talented back-line ensured that long periods of dominance did not go to unrewarded as they powered their way to an impressive 28-3 victory over Gonzaga.

Gonzaga's defence stood firm in the face of intense pressure for the majority of the first half, restricting the winners to just a drop-goal from Paul O'Connell in the first 25 minutes.

However, replacement Darragh Henry provided the spark 'Knock needed, brilliantly slicing through the defence to cross the line.

From the restart, captain Jack O'Neill ran 80 yards for a magnificent individual try to ensure 'Knock's territorial dominance was reflected on the scoreboard at the break.

In the second half, O'Neill touched down for his second try before Jason Daly completed the rout.

Presentation College Bray took a while to get into their stride but still found time to run in four tries as they beat St Patricks Navan 27-0.

Jack Murphy helped himself to a hat-trick and Dylan Doyle and Daniel O'Sullivan scored two apiece as Clongowes ran in 13 tries without reply to crush The High School 80-0 at Suttonians.
