Burke grabs brace to round off Clongowes' rout of 'Nure
Schools Junior Cup 1st Round
Terenure let their hold on their cup crown slip somewhat easily at Donnybrook yesterday, after a strong second-half performance from Clongowes ultimately outdid the south Dublin outfit.
The inclement conditions failed to deter either side but the Clane boys meant business.
They got off to a tremendous start when Cillian Burke made the best of a fine run after gaining possession just outside his own '22'. His offload to Cian O'Donoghue bore rich fruit as the winger made for the corner unhindered for the try. Stephen McVeigh added the conversion with a fine kick from his wrong side.
Jack Ward got Terenure off the mark 10 minutes later to reduce the deficit but McVeigh was on song with his kicking and he swept over another expertly judged penalty to keep his sides' noses in front.
Terenure rallied, but after being camped in the Clongowes half for several minutes they were eventually turned over and Colm Mulcahy launched a counter. He fed Burke and the centre in turn did well to set O'Donoghue clear for his second try.
Ward pulled three points back for Terenure before the break and within four minutes of the restart Rob Lalor crossed over to give the southsiders renewed hope. Ward's conversion from under the posts brought his side to within two.
It was to be the last of the 'Nure threat, however, and on 49 minutes Burke got in for any easy try to capitalise on some poor ball handling from Terenure. McVeigh's conversion gave Clongowes some breathing space and he followed up with a penalty to stretch the lead to 12 points.
Burke capped a fine performance when he put a gloss on the scoreline deep into added-time with another touchdown for his second try of the afternoon.
