Pumas may get chance in Tri-Nations

Tuesday October 09 2007

World Cup surprise package Argentina should be included in an expanded southern hemisphere Tri-Nations tournament, International Rugby Board (IRB) chairman Dr Syd Millar said yesterday.

The Pumas have risen to rugby's top table over the past few years, and yesterday made it into the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history with a 19-13 win over Scotland in Paris.

The South Americans have not hidden their desire to play in either the RBS 6 Nations Championship or the Tri-Nations, but logistical reasons more than anything have prevented any agreement being reached as of yet.

Millar believes the time has come for Argentina to join one of the tournaments, insisting, "you can't neglect them anymore".

Meanwhile, Argentina's Juan Martin Hernandez and Felipe Contepomi are among the five nominees for the International Rugby Board's Player of the Year award.
