Rebranding of Tri-Nations betrays Southern arrogance
SO, the Tri-Nations will now be known as the Rugby Championship following Argentina's entry into the competition.
Or, if you are to give the competition its proper pronunciation according to its New Zealand, South African and Australian advocates, it is THE Rugby Championship -- a vainglorious title that serves a slap in the face to the Six Nations, while strongly implying that the greatest form of the game is played south of the equator.
"The regular participation of Argentina at a higher level is long overdue and we are excited about their inclusion in The Rugby Championship," said SANZAR chief executive Greg Peters.
"The Rugby Championship is an annual contest between the 'best-of-the-best' in world rugby -- nations who have won six of the seven Rugby World Cups."
If only the World Cup final had been refereed consistently, a French victory might have softened the southerners' cough.
