Reigning European Champions Cup champions Saracens have announced the signing of Ireland U20 hooker Tadgh McElroy with the 19-year-old set to join the club's senior academy.

McElroy joins Saracens less than a week after he was axed from Peter Malone's Ireland U20's squad for failing to commit his long term future to Irish Rugby.

As a result, the Dundalk native was subsequently replaced in the Ireland U20's squad by Munster hooker Diarmuid Barron, who started in the 22-21 loss to Italy in Ireland's World Championship opener on Wednesday, with McElroy turning down a contract offer with Connacht to sign with the two-time European champions.

Speaking on McElroy's addition, Saracens academy manager Mike Hynard told the club's website: “Tadgh is a highly-rated prospect and we’re very happy that he will be joining our academy system. He’s a powerful player, a very good ball-carrier and is strong at the set-piece."

"We're looking forward to helping Tadgh settle in at Saracens and help him fulfil his potential both on and off the field.”

McElroy, who grew up playing his club rugby with Dundalk RFC before moving to Lansdowne, said that he was happy to be signing with the 'best club in Europe' and that Saracens was the best place for him to develop as a player.

"I am delighted to have signed for the best club team in Europe currently.

"It will take me out of my comfort zone and challenge me 100% and I have no doubt it is the best place for me to develop as a player in a winning environment with excellent coaches."

McElroy also qualifiers for the English national team through one of his grandparents.
