Newbridge clinched their place in the quarter-finals with an emphatic victory at Donnybrook yesterday.
The Leinster League winners have been on a winning streak. Their confidence to rely on tight defence and hit on the break was apparent from early on.
It all sprouted from a promising St Mary's attack in which they were awarded a penalty after six minutes. Centre Barra O'Loughlin's fine kick rebounded off the crossbar and, when St Mary's reacted quickly to move the ball right, Newbridge centre Donal Conroy picked off an interception and stepped on the accelerator from 80 metres all the way to the posts.
Out-half Sam Cahill added the conversion.
St Mary's hopes of mounting a rally were hit by yellow cards for Conor McGroary and Chris Hart.
Newbridge struck from distance again on 34 minutes when full-back James Gaire put captain John Shanahan away for their second try, with Cahill again converting. Cormac King confirmed Newbridge's superiority by scoring their third try.
