Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll may have hung up his boots, but is proving that old habits die hard after posting a gym session on his Instagram account.
The former Ireland and Lions captain was put through his paces with an intense ropes drill as he maintains his fitness post-retirement.
“More through necessity than desire!,” he wrote. “#dontletthefatmanout #ropesaresoenvogue”
Earlier this week, the 141-cap international recalled the most difficult gym session of his career which occurred in the 2009 pre-season training.
The 2005 Lions captain had returned from holidays, and because he had undergone corrective eye surgery, was behind some of his team-mates with the start of the new campaign looming.
“When Strength and Conditioning coach Chris Dennis (who’s now with Geelong Cats in the AFL) discovered I’d only been training for two days before I was gone again, he decided to beast me on day one," he writes.
"He put me in with a group of players that were three weeks into their pre-season programme
"What ensued was torturous, but what doesn’t kill you and all that".
O’Driscoll said that the session was to take between 45-50 minutes, but “it took me 85 minutes”.
