They looked set to leave empty-handed when they trailed 16-9 at the interval, with three penalties from Gaetan Germain keeping them in contention.

La Rochelle outscored them by two tries to nil but three more penalties from the former Racing Metro player snatched a bonus point.

That could prove invaluable in what looks set to be another relegation battle for Brive.

They will hope for their second home win of the campaign when they entertain Agen on Sunday.

They are currently ninth in the Top 14, with five points from three matches.

Newcastle Falcons entertained Sale Sharks in the opening game of the Kings of the North tournament as clubs continue to prepare for the delayed start of the Premiership due to the World Cup. ut while Falcons led 19-17 at the interval, Dean Richards' men were overrun after the restart with Sharks easing their way to a 36-22 victory at Kingston Park.

Newcastle Falcons are not in action this weekend but will take on Leicester Tigers at Welford Road next weekend as the countdown continues to the start of the real business next month when the Premiership finally gets under way.
