O'Connell's setbacks

April 2011

Damages ligaments in his ankle after landing heavily following a line-out. Likely to miss the rest of the season and in a race against time to be fully recovered for Ireland's World Cup challenge in five months' time.

March 2010 - December 2010

O'Connell picked up a groin injury in Ireland's final Six Nations encounter against Scotland. Diagnosis problems and infection compounded the injury issue and O'Connell was nearly nine months out of action, losing considerable weight during that period.

September 2005 - December 2005

A thumb injury at the start of the season ruled O'Connell out of Munster's early Heineken Cup pool matches as well as the November international campaign -- when Ireland struggled badly in his absence.
