O'Connell to go for surgery

Paul O'Connell's future was last night thrown into doubt after it was confirmed that he is to have surgery on a back injury which has seen him play just twice since May.

Munster confirmed after last night's 24-10 win over Ulster that the lock forward will undergo surgery.

It is not known how long O'Connell, 33, will be out of action but he looks set to miss the Six Nations and is a doubt for the Lions tour to Australia.

"Following consultation between IRFU and Munster medical staff and the player himself, it has been decided that Paul O'Connell will undergo back surgery at the earliest opportunity," a club statement said.

Leinster bid a fond farewell to their faithful departing

At the presentation ceremony following yesterday's gripping Pro12 final, referee John Lacey must have wished the master of ceremonies would bypass the bit where he asked the crowd to show their appreciation for the match officials. The massed ranks of the Ulster faithful unloaded a volley of boos in their direction. True, Lacey started by blowing them off the park but by the end the balance had been restored (13-12 in Leinster's favour), and Ulster were beaten by a better team, a team that have sent off their departing trio of coach Joe Schmidt, Jonny Sexton and Isa Nacewa with another two medals for their collection. And how well deserved.
