Super Rugby link could be key for Pro12

David Walace

It will be interesting to see what way the Pro12 goes in the years to come, writes David Wallace.

There's speculation now regarding the potential for the Pro12 joining up with Super Rugby, it that could be the way ahead.

Obviously the international calendar must be fixed before any such move can take place but it would certainly be one way to gather some lost ground against the money-bags clubs in French and English rugby.

At the moment the Pro12 is struggling to compete with the Top14 and Premiership because of the players they are attracting. But anything to do with Super Rugby would go a long way to improve the product.

Super Rugby is a great brand, with the way they run things and the type of rugby that is played.

The Pro12 is constantly improving but to reach the heights of the English and French leagues they must think outside the box.

That would certainly be one way to ruffle a few feathers.

Argentina and Japan recently went that way to improve their own chances both internationally and financially as rugby brands. It hasn't adversely affected their game, and other than logistically, the Pro12 would surely only improve from it.
