While preparations will be in full flow for tomorrow's Champions Cup meeting of Munster and Treviso at Thomond Park, much of the local focus beforehand will be on tonight's Limerick derby between Thomond and Young Munster.

The sides meet at Tom Clifford Park (7.30pm) in the first round of the Munster Senior Challenge Cup, with a home tie against either UL Bohemians or Cashel in the quarter-final up for grabs.

The last time Young Munster won the competition was back in 2009-10 when they defeated UCC by 22-13. And as a Division 1A Ulster Bank League outfit facing a side two divisions below them, the Cookies will be raging hot favourites against a side that has never won the competition. David Corkery and his coaching team will be hoping that there are no massive cup upsets tonight.

But Thomond have notable wins against Banbridge and Nenagh Ormond to their name already this season and with Young Munster likely to give a couple of their fringe players a run-out, the chances of a shock could be greater than normal.

The final four first round games in the competition take place next weekend, but record winners Garryowen (38 wins) are already through to the last eight where they will meet Cork Con, who are chasing four titles in a row, while Old Crescent have already accounted for Midleton in their first round encounter.
