Garryowen the bookies' favourites to end reign of Leinster

Declan Rooney

Garryowen are favourites to loosen the Leinster grip on the Ulster Bank League Division 1A title, a reign which has lasted for the last three seasons.

The top crown has resided in Dublin since Old Belvedere ended the Munster domination in 2010-11, a bizarre statistic considering Munster clubs had won eight of the previous nine titles and 17 of the 20 leagues up for grabs before that.

Bookies predict Garryowen will be the top Munster club and the most likely to deny Leinster a fourth year of glory, having been installed as 5/1 third favourites behind defending champions Lansdowne and a highly fancied UCD outfit.

Dolphin and Cork Con – the last winners from the province – are considered to be neck and neck, installed as 10/1 fifth favourites, while Young Munster could be in for a long season if the odds compilers are correct, coming in at 25/1 for the title – the second longest price available.
