Munster hooker Diarmuid Barron has replaced Tadgh McElroy in the Ireland U-20s squad for the Junior World Cup, which begins in Georgia on Wednesday.

McElroy was axed from the squad after it emerged he is set to sign for Saracens, with the hope of also playing for England in the future.

The Irish management, headed by Peter Malone, were understandably reluctant to bring a player who was not fully committed to the country and as a result the Dundalk native has been left at home.

The hooker was a key figure in Ireland's Six Nations campaign but was overlooked for a place in the Leinster Academy in favour of Ronan Kelleher, who is expected to start against Italy in the opener.

Connacht offered McElroy, who is eligible for England through a grandparent, a contract but he turned it down for a move to Saracens.

Elsewhere, Ireland Women's sevens side missed out on a place in the last four of the Canada 7s after France ran out 19-5 winners in their quarter-final.

Ireland had beaten Fiji and Spain on the opening day with Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe's hat-trick helping them advance.
