Muliaina move a huge boost for Connacht

I understand the counter-arguments, and have some sympathy, but when players of the quality of Doug Howlett, Christian Cullen, Ruan Pienaar or Rocky Elsom come to Ireland to ply their trade, I welcome them with open arms.

So I am delighted to hear that Mils Muliaina is Connacht-bound.

Yes, the New Zealand full-back is in the final straight of a great career, but think of the interest his move will create, and what it will do in further propagating the game, having an All Black legend (for that he assuredly is) living and playing in the West.

Think too what that means for Robbie Henshaw, now almost certain to be played at outside-centre with Bundee Aki on his inside, and Muliaina coming storming through down the tram line.

I do have issues with the Aki signing, and it is a subject to which I will return, but Muliaina's arrival signals exciting times for Connacht, despite no top-tier European rugby to look forward to next season.
