Mintern wraps up dogged CBC victory

CBC, CORK 13 St Munchin's 3

Thursday February 09 2012

CBC made heavy weather of seeing off Limerick's St Munchin's in the opening round at Musgrave Park yesterday.

While 10 points separated the sides at the end, it was only after Evan Mintern's try in injury-time that Christians were assured of victory after Munchin's had piled on huge pressure in the second half.

The Cork school were on top for much of the game, with No 8 Cian Barry imperious at line-outs, while their scrum was stronger throughout.

After a Michael O'Halloran second-minute penalty, Christians extended their lead in the 20th minute when scrum-half Jamie Murphy went over in the corner. Darren Lee almost added another try before half-time, but lost control after crossing the line.

And while Munchin's were on the back foot for the most part, they gave themselves a chance when hooker Peter Meyer kicked a penalty in the 49th minute to make it 8-3.

However, Mintern wrapped things up for Christians late on when he went over after a rolling maul.
