Maher hat-trick inspires Clongowes
Clongowes Wood 31 CBC Monkstown 26
John Maher is a name to remember as the full-back's three tries saw Clongowes Wood make their way to the Leinster Schools Junior Cup semi-final.
Each of the tries owed almost everything to the full-back's individual brilliance from his first in the fifth minute to his last in injury-time to clinch a thriller.
Monkstown were not short of heroic figures with locks Niall Scully and Liam Forster and centre James Reynolds touching down to help them to a 19-14 lead at the break.
The brilliance of Maher's tries was one thing; their timing quite another. His second was born out of an in-to-out arc to recover the lead in the 35th minute.
Out-half David Wilkinson accelerated away for their next one only for flanker Tadhg Quinn's plunge and Reynolds' stunning conversion to make it a level game.
A replay looked likely until Maher ripped the ball free in contact and made his way to glory from fully 90 metres in the last action of a game and a name to remember.
