Coláiste Lorcáin has this year re-entered the Development Cup competitions after a few years in hibernation.

As a former winner of the Junior Development Cup, it is great to see the Castledermot school back in the Leinster branch competitions, and a great deal of credit must go to recently hired teacher Noel Kinane.

Noel has returned from playing rugby in Australia and has taken on the job of organising rugby in the school. The school is fielding junior and senior teams.

Noel is assisted by Athy RFC CCRO Joe Carbery. The role that Noel, and many teachers like him in other secondary schools, play is an essential part of developing rugby in the traditional non-rugby playing schools.

They see the players on a daily basis and continually encourage them to attend, organise and run the training sessions.

Both the junior and senior rugby teams had decent runs in the Development competitions, with both teams eventually losing out to schools with a higher ratio of club players.

Players from Coláiste Lorcáin have taken up club rugby - Athy RFC, Tullow RFC and Carlow RFC - as a result of tasting the game in the school.

Going forward the aim is to continue to field junior and senior rugby teams with the aim of getting 1st year rugby up and running and possibly girls rugby in the future.

Any queries regarding rugby in either of the schools or youth rugby in the Athy area in general call Joe Carbery, Athy RFC CCRO on 0857618645 or email AthyCCRO@leinsterrugby.ie.
