It was a great learning experience for the young Wicklow players which will stand to them when Westmanstown make the return trip later in the season to Ashtown Lane.

Meanwhile, the U-12 Wicklow squad played host to De La Salle Palmerston at Ashtown Lane in what is the third season for this popular home and away fixture.

The matches were played in perfect weather and a big crowd of parents and supporters got to see over 60 young players from both clubs showing their skills.

Four keenly contested matches were played with all teams showing a great brand of running rugby.

U-12s play 10-a-side with five forwards and five backs, competitive scrums and lineouts and while kicking is allowed, running rugby was the flavour of the day.

As is the tradition in Wicklow Rugby, all players and supporters enjoyed refreshments afterwards in the clubhouse before the DLSP players returned home.

The return fixture in Kilternan will happen later in the season.

Next up for this busy Wicklow squad is the eagerly awaited home derby with Greystones on Sunday.
