Kilkenny pack puts Andrew's on back Foot

Friday February 03 2012

Kilkenny College ran in seven tries as they romped to a comprehensive victory in Arklow yesterday.

The Booterstown students found themselves being put on the back foot by a stronger and more robust Kilkenny pack and the winners' forwards contributed all but one of their tries.

Building on the momentum created before Christmas when winning the Leinster League, Kilkenny drew first blood after 10 minutes when hooker Robin Foot (pictured) scored the first of his two tries. Second-row Joshua Moynan added a second 15 minutes later.

St Andrew's lost their captain Killian McCarthy to injury and, as they fell 17 points behind before the break as No 8 Ross Deacon careered over. Simon Williams converted, having failed with the two earlier kicks.

Things did not get much better for the Dubliners after the restart as Foot and prop Shane Delahunt stretched the lead to 27 points with further tries.

St Andrew's had the consolation of Ben Ingram scoring a marvellous individual try as he sliced through the Kilkenny cover from the ten metre line. Impressive wing Luke de Renzy added the extras.

However, the Kilkenny lads who continued to dominate to the end and further tries by out-half out-half Evan Kelly and flanker Michael Triggs put the icing on their victory.
