Kelleher gets St Michael's rolling
favourites St Michael's showed their credentials for glory in the competition by overpowering a well-drilled Kilkenny at Donnybrook yesterday.
The multi-phase play from St Michael's almost paid dividends twice before captain Ross Byrne punctured Kilkenny's brave defence in the 12th minute. Full-back Cian Kelleher soon followed with the second try into the right corner.
Kilkenny centre Ross Bailey-Kearney then blew through the middle, the pack was held up over the line and wing Sam Sterling was bundled into touch by Dan Greene as they struggled manfully to narrow the gap.
All signs pointed towards a storming second half.
That was before Kelleher breezed over on the left for Byrne's conversion to kill the contest. Still, Kilkenny hit back with a Simon Williams penalty in the 42nd minute, a reflection of and just deserts for their wonderful attitude.
Then, St Michael's tight-head Denis Coulson got outside the cover for the fourth as Kilkenny replacements Thomas Carroll and Stephen Horan made an immediate impact with their carrying.
