'Jes' sent packing by Green

Wednesday January 18 2012

Holders Colaiste Iognaid are out of this year's Connacht Senior Cup after they were beaten by last year's finalists Sligo GS at The Mall yesterday.

The 'Jes' opened the scoring through a penalty from captain Robert Butler on 20 minutes, but failed to score again, as the Grammar gained a measure of revenge for last year's defeat.

Out-half Michael Green got the game's only try on 22 minutes and though he missed the conversion, he also landed two second-half penalties.

Grammar had Eoghan Kilroy sin-binned late in the first half, as the Sligo students led at the break by 5-3.

The victors will now face either Garbally or St Joseph's College in the semi-finals.

NO 8 Jake Maguire punched holes for two tries to see St Gerard's comfortably through to the Leinster Schools Fr Godfrey Junior Cup second round at Naas RFC yesterday.

Overall, the winners had too much firepower for Kilkenny, with full-back Mark Gallagher and blindside Billy O'Reilly -- who was moved from hooker to the flank when Ronan Delaney pulled out in the warm-up -- scoring tries number three and four and centre Adam Simmonds kicking seven points.

Kilkenny actually got off to a flyer with a try by Andrew Conlan, but they couldn't quite sustain that, even though lock Martin Mulhall did burst over for a second touch down amid the Gerard's domination.

St Gerard's -- M Gallagher; S O'Reilly, A Lynch, A Simmonds, A Gilsenan-Kavanagh; M O'Brien, S Murray; S O'Shaughnessy, S Gallagher, R Boland; M O'Toole, G Martin; B O'Reilly, D Smith (capt), J Maguire. Reps: D Morrisroe for Smith (21, temp).

Kilkenny -- B Deverell; I Atkinson, A Conlan, P Sunderland, D Lynch; L O'Sullivan (capt), N Smyth; B Armitage, B Tomkins, M Mulhall; W Oakes, W Whitford; H Ronaldson, A Stephenson, J Bulfin. Reps: H O'Neill for Tomkins, R Honner for Armitage, A Culbert for Oakes, T Christle for Ronaldson, J Drough for Smyth, E Kilbane for Lynch (all 66).
