French internationals Benjamin Kayser, Julien Pierre and Aurélien Rougerie were hospitalised after they were attacked by a dozen individuals armed with "machetes, knives and swords" on Saturday night.

The incident took place in Millau where Clermont Auvergne are currently holding a training camp.

The players were returning to their hotel from a night club when they were set upon by the armed attackers.

All three were rushed to hospital with Kayser and Rougerie both suffering injuries to their arms while second-row Pierre injured his hip and will require surgery for what have been described as "deep cuts".

A statement on the club's official website confirmed the attack while it also stated that a full police investigation has been launched.

"The whole club is both shocked and outraged by these incidents and is providing all the necessary support to the local authorities, who have opened an investigation into the attack to find and punish the perpetrators. In addition to helping the players involved, the club is also contemplating legal proceedings."

Meanwhile, Toulon have emerged as the favourites to sign Welsh prop Adam Jones.

The 33-year-old rejected a contract offer from the Welsh Rugby Union to remain with Ospreys and is now seeking a new club.

According to reports, Jones has signed a pre-contract agreement with the European and French champions as they look to replace former All Black Carl Hayman, whose contract runs out at the end of the coming season.

Jones has been strongly linked with a move to England with Saracens and Bristol both said to be interested but it now appears that Jones will join Toulon after the 2015 World Cup.
