The 10th meeting between America and Ireland, the sixth on US soil, and the sequence of Irish wins remains unbroken. This was Tier 1 against Tier 2 in every respect.

Jacob Stockdale, one of the five uncapped players in the match-day squad – they all got a run - had one of those handy debuts where after just 15 minutes he had a Test try to his name. That would be a small enough club. James Ryan is surely in an even more exclusive set – he was on the field 60 seconds in the second half when man of the match Keith Earls opened the door for him.

Of the others Rory Scannell was on at half time and then shifted in for Joey Carbery earlier than planned. It remains to be seen if Carbery is fit to play again on tour. Tiernan O’Halloran was another casualty which forced Josh van der Flier back on a few minutes after he had gone off.

There were only 2.35 on the clock when Keith Earls got the scoreboard going. He would become a familiar sight, haring down the right wing doing calculations in his head if he could outrun the cover or if he’d need to look for assistance. He covered a massive 190m in first half carries. The Eagles are not short of athletes. So Earls needed to be generous – which he was. If however the home side had athletes who could stay error-free for more than a couple of minutes they would be well sorted.

So while they had lots of possession – 54 per cent in the first half, with 56 per cent territory – Ireland’s defence line was rarely stretched. Rather they could stand off a good few breakdowns and then either go for the poach or let the Eagles spill it themselves.

The only bit of daylight in the Eagles’ world was the try for Nic Civetta at which point his team was trailing 0-17. It came from a block-down on Carbery, less than a minute after he had missed his third conversion.  He had virtually the identical mishap with John Quill after Jack Conan’s try early in the second half, which can’t have been good for his mental wellbeing. His misery was complete when he hobbled off n the second quarter.

Other than that it was all about Ireland. With Tiernan O’Halloran dangerous every time he attacked – he did however butcher one score by kicking instead of looking inside, where Carbery was supporting – there were holes appearing all over the place in the home defence.

By half time the tourists were out to 29-7, and got motoring early in the second half with a Jack Conan  try before it all started to get a bit sloppy. By the end they were a mile in front but looking fairly ragged. They will sleep well on the long, long trek to Japan.
