Brian O'Driscoll leads the reaction to Andy Farrell's appointment as Ireland defence coach
Fomer England assistant coach Andy Farrell will become Ireland's new defence coach this summer.
The announcement of his appointment was made by the IRFU this afternoon and the former Saracens head coach will begin his new role after the Six Nations and in time for Ireland's tour of South Africa this summer, replacing Les Kiss.
Farrell spent four years as assistant to Stuart Lancaster but was axed following England's controversial Rugby World Cup exit at the pool stage following defeats to Wales and Australia.
According to reports, a number of senior players were critical of Farrell's role in the tournament failure and his risk-averse style.
His appointment has prompted a lot of reaction on social media, including from Ireland's record tryscorer Brian O'Driscoll and a very angry George Hook:
So Andy Farrell new @IrishRugby defence coach! Decent business that. Very good coach and motivator. Expect line speed & great kick chase.— Brian O'Driscoll (@BrianODriscoll) January 6, 2016
We seem utterly incapable of believing we can do it ourselves so we have gone and appointed Andy Farrell. Incredible !— George Hook (@ghook) January 6, 2016
Still a good appointment— Gordon D'Arcy (@Gordonwdarcy) January 6, 2016

As a longtime rugby league player/fan, I've long admired Andy Farrell. Delighted his expertise coming on board. Following Les no easy task.— Justin Deegan (@JustinDeeganEsq) January 6, 2016
Andy Farrell plotting strategies against his own son will be interesting to say the least. Interesting dinner table conversations ahead.— Cian Tracey (@CianTracey1) January 6, 2016
Wrote in the aftermath of the RWC that Joe Schmidt needed a strong voice as a defence coach. Andy Farrell might just tick that box.— Rúaidhrí O'Connor (@RuaidhriOC) January 6, 2016
The tweet from BOD & the fact Andy Farrell has been appointed by Joe Schmidt should be all any doubters need to know.— Mucker (@graememccoy) January 6, 2016
Ireland take Andy Farrell - he will be their defence coach at the Six Nations. I'm possibly one of the only gutted English people out there.— Abigail Johnson (@abigailtennis) January 6, 2016
Ireland defence coach a good job for Andy Farrell to get so soon after leaving England. Deserved a soft landing.— Paul Hayward (@_PaulHayward) January 6, 2016
