All Black star Ben Smith suffered a gruesome injury in the victory over Ireland

Ben Smith is a major doubt for New Zealand's clash with France next week after he suffered a very nasty injury in the 21-9 win over Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.

Smith was replace by Waisake Naholo with eight minutes to go after suffering a compound fracture of a finger.

"Benny has broken a finger - what do you call it when the bone sticks out?" asked All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.

"Sore," replied assistant coach Ian Foster, seated alongside him at the press conference.

Sam Cane is also a doubt for the clash with Les Bleus after suffering an ankle injury.

The citing commissioner may also take action for a number of incidents during the game involving Kiwi players.
