I'm Sorry Brian, but i got it wrong
Saturday November 07 2009
As one who advocated Brian O'Driscoll handing the captaincy to Paul O'Connell in his own best interest upon Declan Kidney assuming control, it is nice to be able to state that one year on, I was wrong.
Wrong not in the rationale behind a change of leadership per se -- his game was at a relatively low ebb at the time -- but wrong because of the inspirational leadership he has provided since.
Our greatest ever player provided not only the spark and guile, much like Jack Kyle did in 1948, but also the determined direction and stamp of authority a la Karl Mullen. The best of both iconic legends rolled into one outstanding modern-day talent. Now well on his way to a century of caps, it looks like O'Driscoll could hit that momentous mark as captain.
He is currently on fire, and is THE form player going into the November series. I still believe O'Connell's time as captain will come but for now Kidney has weighed it up wisely and not for the first time made the most prudent call in the best interest of the team. As long as it continues to weigh lightly on his shoulders, then O'Driscoll is the man.
